Fuel Efficiency and Consumption Tutorial

Fuel efficiency is a measure of how far a vehicle can travel per unit of fuel. It is commonly measured in miles per gallon (mpg) or kilometers per liter (km/L).

Units and Conversion
  • Miles per Gallon (US): The number of miles a vehicle can travel per gallon of fuel in the US system.
  • Miles per Gallon (UK): The number of miles a vehicle can travel per gallon of fuel in the UK system. 1 UK gallon = 1.201 US gallons.
  • Kilometers per Liter (km/L): The number of kilometers a vehicle can travel per liter of fuel.
  • Liters per 100 Kilometers (L/100km): The amount of fuel consumed to travel 100 kilometers. It is an inverse measure of fuel efficiency.
Examples

Example 1: Convert 30 mpg (US) to km/L:

30 mpg (US) ≈ 12.75 km/L (1 mpg ≈ 0.4251 km/L)

Example 2: Convert 5 L/100km to mpg (US):

5 L/100km ≈ 47.04 mpg (US) (1 L/100km ≈ 235.21 / L/100km mpg)
